Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Moneyball, The Help, even
Warhorse. All of these movies were somehow based off of books. The fact that
these movies are all also nationally recognized for being awesome by one of the
largest award shows of the year is even more fantastic.

| Mr. Oscar makes his decision |
While I’ve definitely heard some people talk about the “lack
of creativity” in film nowadays, or complain about an over-reliance on stories
that have already been told, I have to disagree. I think that instead of
showing a lack of creativity it shows a new appreciation for literature and the
stories that books tell. It speaks volumes that a single story has become so
popular and influential that it MUST be translated into several different
mediums. It speaks to the passion artists have for these stories, and
indicates, at least to me, that all this hand wringing over the future of books
is a little bit pre-mature. Look at how influential these books have been and
how important books are to us as a culture!
Telling stories is somehow inherent to our very nature. The
specifics will change, but no matter what happens, the world will always have
value for readers and writers.
