Things I'm Tired of Seeing in YA: Running

Why are all teenage girls runners nowadays? Was there some big contemplative running fiesta that I missed out on when I was a teenager? Have we produced a generation of finely toned, lithe limbed running machines? Was it something in the Kool Aid? Why was I not gifted with this wonderful running gene?

For some reason all YA girls are runners now and have the amazing ability to think and move their limbs vigorously at the same time.

Let me illustrate my frustration with this:

Can you spot the differences? (there are five)

  1. Lol! I'm sure your lack of shoes, plus the evil smiling flowers, don't help!

  3. While I think it's a positive trend to show girls being active with their bodies, and not in an anorectic Black Swan or gymnastics kind of way, they can't ALL be runners. Surely some of them can play volleyball or bowl or something.

I just spat my tea all over my keyboard. Totally worth it!

That's too funny, Brit, and a good point. Is running cool now? It wasn't when I was a teen. The problem with running is that it only makes about five percent of people look good. The rest of us look like Picture 2.
