My subconscious is a very weird place. When it's not dreaming of zombie-squid apocalypses or tiny pink koalas (two very recent dreams I had) it's coming up with random story ideas. I've always been a fan of absurdist literature - dystopia, magical realism, sci fi, fantasy - things that stretch the imagination and the bounds of realism, so it makes sense that this is where I get most of my story ideas.
I've never been the kind of person who could look at a person or a leaf and imagine the life of that person or the future of that leaf. I am not a good realist or a good people watcher, but I am a good dreamer. And so, dreams have inspired my stories more than anything else. In fact, dreams are so important to my writing process that I keep a dream journal next to my bed so that when I wake up I'll be able to write them down and remember them. In fact, all of my most recent stories have been based on dreams I've had.
Inspiration can come from anywhere! Where do your story ideas come from?
I used to keep a dream journal too. A lot of my ideas used to come from my dreams. Then I got inspiration from songs and pictures.
ReplyDeleteNow, I get my inspiration from movies and other books. Particularly Bandslam. I never would have guessed that was such a good movie--especially with Vanessa Hudgens and Aly, from Aly and AJ. Just goes to show that inspiration can come from anywhere.
Dreaming is good. I dreamed this morning that I had to look up the wikihow page on riding elephants (there isn't one) and post it on FaceBook because it was very important that some unknown FB friend have that info, lol!
ReplyDeleteTiny pink koalas sounds like more fun.
