Rules are made to be broken, but you can’t break them unless you know them first. Every Tuesday I’ll give you a few tips that might help you push your manuscript to the top of the slush pile.
When querying picture books:
1. Use a normal font. Comic Sans does not make your query more whimsical, just harder to read.
2. Don’t base your story around a moral. Didactic themes can work sometimes, but are usually not very compelling or fun to read. Kids want fun eye catching books that they can come back to again and again, not a lesson.
3. Copy the WHOLE story to the bottom of the email. I can’t judge a picture book based on a synopsis or the first four lines. I promise we won’t steal your idea, I just want to see how great you are!
